- I believe Netscape is giving you an accurate speed rating for the
- transfer. The person quoting the speed of ".5cps" probably means
- 5Kcps.... This would be 500 characters per second. It dropped from
- a high of say 2.0 to say 2.6 kilo bites per second? This sounds
- right. My 14,400 baud modem tops out at about 1.3 kbs for continuous
- downloads from average to good servers. The best sustained speed I
- can remember is 1.6 to 1.7 kbs. This was from an exceptional server.
- Since I am referring to speeds obtained with a dialup cPPP connection
- to my ISP, and I assume that they are not usually the bottleneck, I
- blame the slowdowns on either output rate of the server I have
- relayed the request to, via my ISP, high volume net use or
- difficulties with the host's connection to the internet, high volume
- of current use on the host or other technical problems at the host
- end or finally bad line conditions between me and the ISP on the POTS
- (plain old telephone system).
- The Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter (uuart) chips in your
- computer, (that are part of your serial port hardware), should be
- 16550 A, AF or N type to assure high speed trans/rcv'ing. Run MSD,
- in MS-DOS, at the c:\ prompt, for a report of your system's hardware,
- including which ports are using what grade (# or type) of UUART
- chips. If you use WIN 3.x, but not 3.11WFW or WIN 95 or NT, then you
- should upgrade your communication driver (comm.drv) to cybercom.com,
- obtainable as shareware on most Internet repositories. It comes with
- instructions to install it. Basically place it in the directory:
- windows\system and change the line in windows\system.ini that reads
- comm.drv=comm.drv to read: comm.drv=cybercom.drv. Doing all this
- will enable your communication port to cache information on both
- receives and transmits as it was designed to do. All downloads
- require transmission of data in both directions, actually, although
- most of it flows primarily in one direction. Having a cache that is
- enabled in one direction only will slow down the whole process. WIN
- 95, NT and WFW have a better com. driver already! TS
